The historic beginnings of the Western New York region in many ways emerged following the American Revolution, and the Treaty of Hartford in 1786, although the area shared a deep-rooted tradition with Native tribes that pre-date contact with Europeans. However, the 1790s and 1800s saw a widespread migration with people relocating from elsewhere in America and Europe. Among the businesses that began to grow was the production of red earthenware, where some potters relocated from the elsewhere in the Northeast, the Mid-Atlantic region and Europe. . This book is the first of its kind to explore the red earthenware produced in Western New York through archaeology, historical records and surviving objects.

Justin W. Thomas is a resident of Newburyport, Massachusetts, and a collector, researcher and writer about American pottery production from the seventeenth through the early-twentieth century. He is also the author of numerous other books, all available on this website.  Two Volumes
