Spotlight Talk: Reverend Hale’s A MODEST ENQUIRY INTO THE NATURE OF WITCHCRAFT

February 9 @ 12:30 pm - 1:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 12:30 pm on Wednesday, repeating until February 23, 2022

In 1692, when Betty Parris and Abigail Williams first began showing signs of a strange affliction, Reverend John Hale of Beverly was called to Salem Village observe the girls. He agreed with others that the cause was likely witchcraft. For many months, Reverend Hale continued to support the accusers and the court at trials of the accused. That is, until accusations against one of his own family caused him to question his previous judgement, prompting him to write about his experiences in his book, A Modest Enquiry into the Nature of Witchcraft.
