SUMMARY:Project 1692: The Beverly Files Walking Tour *Multiple Dates*
DESCRIPTION:Uncover Beverly’s hidden history in 1692 through stories\, evidence\, and firsthand accounts from the Salem Witch Trials. \nProject 1692: The Beverly Files is a historical tour and educational collaboration between Ancestry Tour Agents and Historic Beverly that explores Beverly’s deep connection to the Salem Witch Trials. Through historic places\, primary sources\, and the stories of the people who lived through the crisis\, the program examines not only what happened but how fear\, belief\, community tensions\, and flawed evidence could turn suspicion into accusation. \nWhile Salem has become synonymous with the witch trials\, Beverly was very much part of the story. Several Beverly residents including Dorcas Hoar\, Job Tookey\, Mary Morey\, Sarah Morrill\, and Susanna Roots were accused of witchcraft. None were executed\, but their experiences reveal the very real consequences of the 1692 panic. \nAt the center of Beverly’s story is Reverend John Hale\, Beverly’s first minister. Initially a supporter of the examinations\, Hale’s perspective changed dramatically when his own wife\, Sarah Hale\, was accused of witchcraft. His experience ultimately led him to question the methods used during the trials\, including the reliance on so-called “spectral evidence.” He later published A Modest Enquiry Into the Nature of Witchcraft\, one of the important contemporary critiques of the trials. \nThe story reaches even further back at Balch House\, where\, two years before the 1692 crisis\, an 18-year-old bedridden boy claimed to be tormented by local witches\, a disturbing early episode that foreshadowed the accusations to come. \nDuring Project 1692: The Beverly Files\, participants will explore these stories through the historic sites and collections of Historic Beverly\, including the John Cabot House\, where Beverly’s 17th-century connection to the witchcraft crisis is interpreted\, and Hale Farm\, the 1694 home of Reverend John Hale. \nThis is not a tour designed to sensationalize the Salem Witch Trials. It is an opportunity to look more closely\, ask difficult questions\, and examine the historical record for ourselves. \nCome discover the people behind the accusations\, the evidence behind the stories\, and Beverly’s place in the larger history of 1692. \nTickets for all dates are available here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/project-1692-the-beverly-files-walking-tour-tickets-2001005503326?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:Wicked Beverly: Witches & Monsters on the North Shore Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Beverly has always been a little wicked. \nFor nearly 400 years\, the city has collected stories of witches\, ghosts\, strange creatures\, unexplained sightings\, and things that go bump in the North Shore night. Some tales are rooted in the historical record. Others have been passed down through generations\, growing a little stranger\, and perhaps a little more entertaining\, with each retelling. \nJoin us for a walk through downtown Beverly as we dig into the darker and stranger side of local history. Along the way\, we’ll encounter witchcraft accusations\, ghostly encounters\, mysterious creatures\, local legends\, and stories of the unexplained. We’ll explore the places where these tales took root and consider what they reveal about the people\, fears\, and imaginations of earlier generations. \nWhen autumn settles over the North Shore\, Beverly’s streets take on a different character. Join us after dark to uncover the strange stories\, unsettling encounters\, and enduring legends that have haunted this community for more than four centuries. Whether you’re a believer\, a skeptic\, or simply someone who enjoys a good ghost story\, you’ll find plenty to keep you looking over your shoulder. \nThe past is never quite as quiet as it seems.

SUMMARY:Coffee & Conversation (with the dead): Seance & the Spiritualism Movement in Essex County
DESCRIPTION:Coffee & Conversation with the Dead \nWhat happens when the dead start talking back? \nJoin us on Friday the 13th for a special Coffee & Conversation exploring Spiritualism in Beverly and Essex County. We’ll begin with a “séance” inspired by the techniques used by nineteenth-century mediums\, complete with a few mysterious messages from beyond the grave. \nBut don’t believe everything you see. \nAfter the “séance\,” we’ll pull back the curtain and reveal how some of these effects were created before diving into the fascinating history of Spiritualism. From spirit communication to séances and spirit photography\, Spiritualism became enormously popular during the nineteenth century\, attracting both devoted believers and determined skeptics. \nWe’ll explore how the movement took hold in Essex County\, look at local stories and practitioners\, and examine the sometimes-blurry line between faith\, entertainment\, fraud\, and the very human desire to communicate with those we’ve lost. \nCome for the ghosts. Stay to find out how they did it. \nFree and open to the public. Coffee & Conversation is generously sponsored by Beantrust.

SUMMARY:3 in 30: Three Sisters Story & Objects
DESCRIPTION:Corn\, beans\, and squash were among the most important crops grown by Indigenous peoples in this region for generations before European settlement. Grown together in a system often known as the Three Sisters\, each plant supported the others: corn provided a structure for climbing beans\, beans helped enrich the soil\, and broad squash leaves helped retain moisture and suppress weeds. \nFor this edition of 3 in 30\, we’ll use three objects from Historic Beverly’s collection to explore the Three Sisters and the long history of these foods on the North Shore. Through three objects\, we’ll explore what was grown here\, how these foods were used\, and the much longer agricultural history beneath the farms\, gardens\, and dinner tables of later generations. \nThree objects. Three sisters. Thirty minutes.

SUMMARY:The Spirit of Christmas Past: Four Centuries of Christmas in America
DESCRIPTION:What did Christmas look like in America 100\, 200\, or even 400 years ago? \nJoin Historic Beverly for The Spirit of Christmas Past: Four Centuries of Christmas in America\, a richly illustrated journey through the surprising history of Christmas in New England and beyond. From its controversial beginnings in 17th-century New England—where Christmas was actually banned—to the festive\, family-centered celebration we know today\, discover how one of America’s most beloved holidays evolved over four centuries. \nAlong the way\, historian and educator Ken Turino will explore the origins of familiar Christmas traditions and reveal how the holiday transformed from a time of raucous public revelry into the warm\, domestic celebration associated with Christmas today. \nDrawing on historic images\, stories\, and traditions from across New England\, the program will also bring the history home to the North Shore\, exploring what Christmas may have looked like in communities like Beverly throughout the centuries. \nWhether you are a history enthusiast\, a lover of the holiday season\, or simply curious about the origins of our “traditional” Christmas\, The Spirit of Christmas Past offers a fascinating look at how history\, culture\, and tradition shaped the way we celebrate. \nAbout Ken Turino\nKen Turino is a curator\, educator\, author\, and nationally recognized leader in community engagement\, historic interpretation\, and public history. As Manager of Community Partnerships and Resource Development at Historic New England\, he oversaw numerous regional projects and exhibitions and has published widely on public history and historic house museums. \nHis publications include Reinventing the Historic House Museum (2019)\, co-edited with Max van Balgooy\, and Interpreting Christmas at Museums and Historic Sites (2024). \nKen holds a Master of Arts in Teaching from George Washington University. SUMMARY:Coffee & Conversation: The Beverly Tea Party
DESCRIPTION:Coffee\, Tea & Conversation: Steeped in Revolution \nNo taxation without caffeination! \nThis December\, we’re adding a little tea to our usual Coffee & Conversation. Join us for a special tea party exploring the surprisingly political history of what New Englanders put in their cups. \nWe’ll begin with the Boston Tea Party and the other tea protests and boycotts that swept through the colonies in the years leading up to the American Revolution. When drinking imported tea became a political statement\, Americans experimented with “Liberty Teas” made from local plants and increasingly turned to another familiar drink: coffee. \nNearly a century later\, tea became political once again. In December 1873\, thousands gathered at Faneuil Hall for the New England Woman’s Suffrage Association’s “Woman’s Tea Party\,” deliberately invoking the legacy of the Revolution in the continuing fight for voting rights. \nAnd because talking about tea is considerably more fun while drinking it\, we’ll have a selection to sample along the way\, including Bohea-style black tea like the varieties destroyed in Boston Harbor\, herbal Liberty Teas\, and\, of course\, coffee. \nCome have a cup with us and discover how something as ordinary as your morning drink became part of protests\, boycotts\, revolutions\, and changing American identity. \nCoffee and Conversation is generously sponsored by Beantrust

SUMMARY:3 in 30: Holiday Cards of Yesteryear
DESCRIPTION:This holiday season\, we are going to take a journey into the past and explore the holiday cards of yesteryear. The cards we know today got their start from the Victorian era\, specifically with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of England’s traditions and Charles Dickens. This month’s 3 in 30 will look at three holiday cards as well as explore what common themes were present\, from children being bullied by animals to elaborate ones that look like lace. \nThis program is free to the public. A $5 donation would be greatly appreciated. Advance registration is required.

SUMMARY:From the Archives: Walker Transportation Films
DESCRIPTION:For decades\, the Walker Transportation Collection has included a remarkable group of motion picture films documenting transportation\, people\, and places from another era. But many of these films have been difficult\, or impossible\, to view in their original format due to their age and fragile condition.\nNow\, thanks to a recent digitization project\, 40 Walker Transportation film reels have been preserved in digital form\, allowing Historic Beverly to bring these previously inaccessible moving images back to the community.\n\nJoin us for a special afternoon screening featuring selections from the newly digitized films. Together\, we’ll experience these fascinating glimpses of the past while celebrating the important work of preserving them for future generations.\nSnacks will be provided.\n\nSeen here are pieces from the Walker Transportation Collection: Beverly Farms train depot 1850\, Hotel Trafton advertisement\, Beverly omnibus c. 1906\, Beverly depot 1906.
